Welcome
Welcome to the Rupert River Legacy Canoe Trip. This blog will allow friends, family members and others to follow the progress of the trip.
The summer of 2009 represents the last chance to experience the power and majesty of the entire Rupert River in its natural state before the closing of the Rupert dam in the fall of 2009. The Cree Regional Authority, through the Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Program, has organized a unique project to document and commemorate the Rupert River and its importance to the Cree people throughout their history, in order to preserve the legacy of the river and surrounding lands for future generations.
Guided by Matthew Neeposh, from Mistissini (assisted by René Wapachee from Nemaska), the trip participants include Clifford Loon, Gabriel Blacksmith and Terence Matoush from Mistissini, Pearl Herodier and Thomas Jolly, Jr. from Nemaska and Bruce Moses and Marlene Salt Moses from Waskaganish. Archaeologist Ben Pentz is leading the group in the documentation of archaeological sites and other locations of cultural and historical importance along the route.
The trip from Mistissini to Waskaganish involves a distance of some 525 km, as the crow flies. The idea is not to speed to the finish, but instead, over a period of six weeks, to experience the beauty of these ancestral Cree lands before the dramatic changes take place in the fall. By combining a traditional Cree bush-craft experience with wilderness training, learning from local elders and land-users, and archaeological research, the 2009 Rupert River Legacy Canoe Trip offers a unique opportunity to commemorate, document and share the cultural legacy of the Rupert River with future generations.
